How the poultry sector works in Côte d’Ivoire

The Ivorian poultry sector is a chain of trades that depend on one another: hatcheries, feed mills, farms, slaughterhouses, traders and consumers. It is supported by the IPRAVI inter-professional body and supervised by the State veterinary services.

A chain of links

Upstream, hatcheries produce day-old chicks and feed mills produce feed. In the middle, farmers raise broilers, coloured chickens and layers. Downstream, slaughterhouses, traders and shopkeepers bring meat and eggs to consumers.

Around them work vets, technicians, equipment suppliers and carriers.

Each link depends on the others

A good chick achieves nothing without good feed and good management. An efficient farmer loses his margin if he cannot find a buyer. A slaughterhouse needs regular, healthy batches.

When one link weakens (disease, scarce feed, saturated market), the whole chain feels it. That is why coordination between players matters so much.

The role of the IPRAVI inter-professional body

IPRAVI, the Ivorian poultry inter-professional body, brings together professionals from across the sector. It provides a forum for dialogue between the different trades, represents the sector to the public authorities and helps inform and organise its members.

NEXTEKCI is a member.

The State veterinary services

The veterinary services of the ministry in charge of animal resources issue approvals for establishments (hatcheries, feed mills, slaughterhouses, imports), monitor animal health and product hygiene, and organise the response when a notifiable disease occurs.

For the farmer, they are also a point of contact to learn about procedures and obligations.

Where NEXTEKCI fits

Based in Agnibilékrou since 2006, NEXTEKCI holds approvals for hatchery operation, chick imports, hatching egg imports, poultry feed manufacturing and slaughtering. Its day-old chicks are available throughout Côte d’Ivoire.

Through the free online NEXTEKCI School, the company also contributes to farmer training.
