Complete guide: rearing day-old chicksin Côte d'Ivoire (Ivory Coast)

In brief: successful poultry farming starts with a good breed, a brooder house that is ready (heat, litter, water) and a careful reception. NEXTEKCI, a hatchery in Agnibilékrou since 2006, delivers day-old chicks throughout Côte d'Ivoire with departures on Monday and Thursday at 10 pm and WhatsApp support during brooding.

1. Choosing your breed

In brief: NEXTEKCI offers 6 day-old chick breeds: white broiler (Cobb 500 type) for intensive farming, red broiler and barred grey for hardiness, hybrid for balance, white cockerel for getting started on a small budget and female-sexed brown layer for eggs. The right choice depends on your objective, your poultry house and your market.

White broiler

Cobb 500 type

Fast growth and an excellent feed conversion ratio: the benchmark choice for intensive commercial farming in short cycles.

Red broiler

Known as “red chicken” — same family as Sasso-type coloured breeds

Hardy red/russet chicks, well suited to the tropical climate. Firm meat that is very popular on the local market.

Barred grey

Often called “black broiler” — comparable to what people look for under “Kuroiler”

Dark barred plumage, an improved traditional breed, perfect for semi-free-range and backyard farming.

Hybrid

Known as “improved local hybrid” — mix of colours

Available in red, barred grey or mixed. A balance between growth, robustness and market value.

White cockerel

Males — budget option

The ideal solution for getting started in poultry farming: NEXTEKCI quality at an affordable price for new poultry farmers.

Brown layer

Female-sexed (≈ 99% reliability)

Selected for egg production: high laying rate, commercial-size eggs, vaccinated against Marek's disease at the hatchery.

2. Preparing the brooder house

In brief: Before the batch arrives, everything must be ready: a clean, well-ventilated and calm room, heat source switched on, dry non-toxic litter, drinkers filled with lukewarm water and starter feed available. After disinfection, air the room completely before putting the chicks in: this is one of the most common mistakes.

Heat and ventilation

Provide a reliable heat source (gas brooder, lamp or secured charcoal) and a room that keeps a stable temperature without draughts. Heat/ventilation is the first of the 3 critical first-week mistakes identified by our team. Air the room well after any disinfection before putting the chicks in.

Clean, non-toxic litter

Use dry, clean, non-toxic litter (untreated white wood shavings, for example). Avoid dusty, damp or chemically treated materials. The litter must cover the floor evenly and stay dry throughout the first week.

Water and drinkers ready before arrival

Set up clean drinkers, filled before the batch arrives, with lukewarm water (never ice-cold); add vitamins if your technical adviser recommends it. Also have the feeders and starter feed ready so you can feed quickly after the chicks have drunk.

A calm, secure area

Choose a clean, well-ventilated and calm room, protected from predators and visitors. Limit entry (dedicated footwear, hand washing): hygiene and biosecurity are part of NEXTEKCI's Day 0–Day 7 micro-guides.

The complete Day 0–Day 7 micro-guides (reception in 10 checks, Day 0–Day 3 routine, density and lighting, hygiene) are presented on the services page and sent on request via WhatsApp.

3. Successfully receiving the batch

In brief: On the day, be reachable from 6 am at the handover point agreed with the carrier. Then: open the boxes calmly, give lukewarm water quickly, observe the batch for 2 to 3 hours and adjust the heat. If in doubt, send photos and videos to WhatsApp Information for a quick diagnosis within 72 hours.

1

Be present and reachable from 6 am

In Abidjan (Yopougon), the chicks arrive on Tuesday and Friday from 6 am. Stay reachable: coordination with the carrier is done via WhatsApp. Collection takes place at an agreed point (junction, bus station, terminus) — NEXTEKCI does not deliver to your door.

2

Open the boxes calmly

Once in the brooder house, open the boxes calmly, check the ventilation and observe the batch. Each box contains exactly 50 chicks, with full batch identification.

3

Give lukewarm water quickly

Get the chicks drinking quickly: lukewarm, clean water, with vitamins if advised. Drinking quickly is the top priority after transport, even before feed.

4

Observe, sort and adjust

Observe the batch for 2 to 3 hours: spread under the heat, behaviour, weak birds to isolate. Adjust the temperature according to behaviour (chicks huddled together = cold, away from the source = too hot). Respect the recommended stocking density.

5

If in doubt, photos → WhatsApp

Send photos or videos to +225 05 44 83 27 79 for a quick opinion. NEXTEKCI support assists you for 72 hours after receipt, and Day 0–Day 7 micro-guides are available on request.

5. Vaccination

In brief: At NEXTEKCI, brown layers are vaccinated against Marek's disease at the hatchery (certificate on request). The other chicks (white broiler, red broiler, barred grey, hybrid, cockerel) receive no vaccine at the hatchery: vaccination is done on the farm, following the protocol of the local veterinarian.

Marek's vaccine at the hatchery (layers)

Marek's disease is a viral disease of poultry for which the vaccine is given at hatching. All NEXTEKCI brown layers are vaccinated against Marek's disease at the Agnibilékrou hatchery; a certificate is available on request, and the vaccination history of each batch is traced.

The rest of the protocol is done on the farm

Broiler breeds and the cockerel receive no vaccine at the hatchery: vaccination is done on the farm, following the protocol of the local veterinarian, who knows the diseases present in your area. Need a contact? WhatsApp Information +225 05 44 83 27 79.

6. Common first-day mistakes

In brief: First-day losses almost always come from the same causes: a cold room, ice-cold or late water, unsuitable litter, a poorly aired room after disinfection, too high a stocking density and no reaction to the first signs. Six simple reflexes are enough to avoid most of these losses.

Receiving the chicks in a cold room

The room must be heated before arrival, not after. A day-old chick cannot yet regulate its temperature: the cold of the first day is paid for throughout the whole flock.

Giving ice-cold water or being slow to give water

After overnight transport, the priority is lukewarm water, straight away. Cold water shocks the chicks and delays brooding.

Neglecting the litter

Damp, dusty or chemically treated litter: all risks for the legs and breathing. Dry, non-toxic litter, checked every day.

Putting the chicks in just after disinfection

Airing after disinfection is one of the 3 critical mistakes identified by NEXTEKCI: let the room air out completely before putting the batch in.

Overcrowding the brooder house

Too high a stocking density increases stress, crushing and competition at the drinker. Respect the density and provide soft lighting.

Facing a problem alone

Weak birds, abnormal mortality, strange behaviour: don't guess. Send photos and videos to WhatsApp Information (+225 05 44 83 27 79) for a quick diagnosis during the first 72 hours.

7. Ordering on WhatsApp, step by step

In brief: Ordering from NEXTEKCI is done entirely on WhatsApp: contact on +225 07 07 72 78 67, choice of breed and quantity (boxes of 50), confirmation of the day's price, payment in advance by mobile money, cash or bank transfer, then receipt on Tuesday or Friday morning depending on your route.

8. Glossary of poultry terms in Côte d'Ivoire

In brief: Day-old chick, sujet, breed, coloured broiler, improved hybrid, brooder house, stocking density, Marek… The vocabulary of Ivorian poultry farming mixes technical terms and popular names. This glossary gives the simple definition of each term, as it is used by poultry farmers and by NEXTEKCI.

Day-old chick
A chick hatched less than 24 hours ago, sold as soon as it leaves the hatchery. It is NEXTEKCI's only product, in boxes of 50.
Sujet (head)
Term commonly used in Côte d'Ivoire for a single farm animal: “200 sujets” = 200 chicks, i.e. 4 boxes.
Breed
A genetic line selected for a purpose: meat (growth), laying (eggs) or dual-purpose. NEXTEKCI offers 6 chick breeds.
Coloured broiler
Umbrella term for coloured broiler chickens: red broiler, barred grey and hybrid, as opposed to white broiler.
Black broiler
Popular name for the dark-feathered broiler chick. At NEXTEKCI, it corresponds to the barred grey, comparable to what people look for under “Kuroiler”.
Improved hybrid
Popular name (also “improved local hybrid”) for the chicken resulting from crosses of coloured breeds. NEXTEKCI equivalent: the hybrid, in red, barred grey or mixed.
Cockerel
A male chick. The NEXTEKCI white cockerel is the ideal budget option for getting started in poultry farming.
Layer
A hen raised for egg production. The NEXTEKCI brown layer is female-sexed (≈ 99% reliability) and vaccinated against Marek's disease at the hatchery.
Sexing
Sorting chicks by sex. At NEXTEKCI, only the layer chick is sexed (females); broiler breeds are supplied as mixed males/females.
Brooder house
A heated, protected space where the chicks spend their first weeks: heat, litter, drinkers, feeders and a calm area.
Litter
A layer of dry, non-toxic material (shavings, for example) laid on the floor to insulate and absorb moisture.
Stocking density
Number of chicks per square metre. A controlled density reduces stress, crushing and competition at the drinker.
Marek's disease
A viral disease of poultry. The vaccine is given at the hatchery: at NEXTEKCI, brown layers are vaccinated against Marek's disease, certificate available on request.
Day 0–Day 7
The first 7 days of rearing, the most critical period. NEXTEKCI provides micro-guides and dedicated WhatsApp support during this period.
Delivery route
Fixed itinerary of the partner carriers: Agnibilékrou–Bouaké, Agnibilékrou–Daloa, Agnibilékrou–Abidjan; routes to Lakota, Soubré and Gagnoa coming soon.
Handover point
A place agreed with the carrier to collect the chicks (junction, bus station, village): NEXTEKCI does not deliver to your door.

Frequently asked questions from poultry farmers

Which chick breed should I choose to get started in Côte d'Ivoire?

To get started, the white cockerel (budget) or the hybrid (balanced between growth and robustness) are recommended. For intensive commercial farming, choose the Cobb 500-type white broiler; for hardy or semi-free-range farming, the red broiler or the barred grey. The NEXTEKCI team gives free advice via WhatsApp on +225 05 44 83 27 79.

What needs to be prepared before the chicks arrive?

A clean, well-ventilated and calm room; a heat source switched on before arrival; dry, non-toxic litter; clean drinkers filled with lukewarm water; feeders and starter feed. After disinfection, air the room completely before putting the chicks in.

What should I do as soon as the batch arrives?

Open the boxes calmly, check the ventilation, give lukewarm water quickly, then observe the batch for 2 to 3 hours to adjust the heat and isolate weak birds. If in doubt, send photos or videos to +225 05 44 83 27 79: NEXTEKCI support assists you for the first 72 hours.

Are NEXTEKCI chicks vaccinated?

Brown layers are vaccinated against Marek's disease at the hatchery (certificate on request). The other chicks (white broiler, red broiler, barred grey, hybrid, cockerel) receive no vaccine at the hatchery: vaccination is done on the farm, following the protocol of the local veterinarian.

On which days does NEXTEKCI deliver and to which towns?
