Feeding of chicks: starter, grower, finisher — what to remember

Each phase of rearing has its feed. Understanding the logic of starter, grower, finisher to avoid waste and properly feed your flock in Côte d'Ivoire.

Feeding of chicks: starter, grower, finisher — what to remember

Feed is, by far, the largest expense in poultry farming. Choosing it well and distributing it properly protects both the health of the flock and the profitability of the project. Here is the logic of the feeding phases, explained simply.

Why three phases and not just one bag?

A day-old chick and a broiler at the end of the cycle do not have the same needs. The young chick builds its skeleton, organs, and defences: it needs a starter feed that is rich and easy to peck at. In the grower phase, the bird develops its mass: grower feed takes over. At the end of the broiler cycle, finisher feed supports the last weeks before sale. Providing inappropriate feed for the age either wastes expensive feed or hinders growth.

The starter phase: the phase that cannot be caught up

At NEXTEKCI, each chick receives starter feed immediately after hatching, even before leaving the hatchery in Agnibilékrou. Upon receipt, the rule is strict: warm water first, then starter feed quickly after drinking. The first days condition the uniformity of the entire flock — a batch that eats well from day one develops consistently, while a poorly started batch remains heterogeneous until the end.

The golden rules of distribution

Regardless of the phase, some principles never change. Serve dry, clean feed stored away from moisture and rodents: mouldy feed can poison an entire flock. Provide enough feeders so that all the birds can eat without fighting — competition at the feeder widens the gaps. And do not forget that water is part of the diet: a bird that drinks poorly eats poorly.

Adapting feed to the breed

A white broiler of the Cobb 500 type, selected for its growth rate and feed conversion ratio, fully benefits from a rigorous feeding programme. Rustic breeds — red broiler, barred grey, hybrid — tolerate more flexible management, particularly in semi-free range where they supplement their ration. Layers, on the other hand, follow a specific programme aimed at preparing and then supporting egg production.
