The enthusiasm of the first poultry project often leads to thinking big: large building, large numbers, large budget. It’s human — and it’s precisely the mistake that costs beginners the most. Here’s why wisdom dictates starting small, and how to do it intelligently.
The first flock is a school
Regardless of the quality of the advice received, nothing replaces experience: managing heat at night, recognising a weak individual, maintaining the routine of water and feed, reacting to an unforeseen event. On a small flock, each learning error costs little; on a large number, the same error multiplies by the number of individuals. Your first objective is not to maximise profit: it is to learn to manage a flock to the end.
Small numbers, complete requirements
Starting small does not mean starting poorly equipped. Even for a box of 50 day-old chicks — the sales unit of NEXTEKCI — all the fundamentals are necessary: heated room before arrival, dry litter, warm water upon receipt, sufficient feeders and drinkers, strict hygiene. The small scale reduces financial risk, not technical requirements. This is precisely what makes it an excellent learning ground.
The ideal breeds to start with
For a first flock, NEXTEKCI recommends two options. The white cockerel, the economical option of the range: a low initial investment to gain experience without pressure. Or the premium hybrid, balanced between performance and hardiness, which is more forgiving of management imperfections than an industrial white broiler. Rustic breeds — red broiler, barred grey — are also good candidates in semi-freedom.
Growing flock by flock
The right trajectory is gradual: a first flock to learn, a second to correct and confirm, then an increase in numbers based on real results — your results, not those of a theoretical table. At each stage, the gains are consolidated: routine, suppliers, clientele, cash flow. This is how sustainable poultry farms are built.
