How to recognise a quality day-old chick?

Lively, dry, on its feet, from a traceable hatchery: the signs of a good day-old chick, and the quality behind the scenes at the NEXTEKCI hatchery in Agnibilékrou.

How to recognise a quality day-old chick?

All day-old chicks look alike... for five minutes. After that, the difference in quality becomes apparent — and it pays off or is reaped throughout the flock. Here’s how to recognise a good chick, and what happens behind the scenes in a serious hatchery.

The visible signs of a good chick

Upon opening the boxes, a quality chick can be recognised at a glance:

  • lively and responsive: it moves, explores, reacts to noise and light;
  • well on its feet: straight posture, assured gait;
  • dry and clean down: a sign of a well-conducted hatching and conditioning;
  • active behaviour towards water and feed as soon as they are placed.

Conversely, beware of a batch that is generally apathetic, wet, or heterogeneous. A few tired individuals after a night’s transport is normal; an entire amorphous batch is not.

Quality starts before hatching

What you see upon receipt is the result of an invisible chain. At NEXTEKCI, a hatchery established in Agnibilékrou since 2006, this chain includes:

  • selected breeders upstream;
  • controlled incubation: regulated temperature, optimised humidity, precise turning and ventilation;
  • manual sorting post-hatching: each chick is checked before leaving;
  • feeding from birth, for chicks that arrive at your place already well-started.

Traceability: demand to know where your batch comes from

A quality chick has a clear origin. At NEXTEKCI, each box of 50 chicks carries a complete batch identification. This traceability protects you: in case of a question or concern, we know exactly which batch it is and support can respond quickly.

Beware of batches without origin, sold by the roadside or through unknown accounts: the apparent savings of the day often come at the cost of mortality the following week.

The real test: the first 72 hours

The quality of a chick is confirmed in the first three days — provided that the reception is well conducted: heated room before arrival, immediate warm water, dry litter, attentive observation. A good chick in a cold room will not perform miracles. Hatchery quality + farmer's rigor: that’s the complete equation.
