How many chicks per square metre? Understanding stocking density

Density is the number of chicks per m² — and one of the most underestimated settings. Overcrowded, the room creates stress and losses.

How many chicks per square metre? Understanding stocking density

« How many chicks can I put in my room? » The question seems simple, the answer is less so: the right density depends on the age of the subjects, the breed, the ventilation, and the climate of your area. But one thing is certain: overcrowding always comes at a cost. Here’s how to reason.

What exactly is density?

The NEXTEKCI glossary defines it as follows: density is the number of chicks per square metre. A controlled density reduces stress, crushing, and competition at the drinker. It is a setting as important as heat or water — but much less monitored.

What happens when the room is overcrowded

The NEXTEKCI guide classifies overcrowding among the common mistakes of the first day. A density that is too high causes a cascade of problems:

  • permanent stress: the chicks jostle, trample each other, sleep poorly;
  • crushing: at the slightest gathering (cold, fear), the subjects underneath suffocate;
  • competition at the drinker and feeder: the smaller subjects can no longer access water or feed, and the flock becomes heterogeneous;
  • litter quickly deteriorates: more droppings per m², more humidity, more health risks.

How to know if your density is good?

Observe your flock — it is always right:

  • the chicks can move freely between heat, water, and feed;
  • all subjects, even the smallest, access the drinkers without a fight;
  • at rest, the flock spreads comfortably without crowding;
  • the litter remains generally dry between two cleanings.

If any of these points are consistently off, your room is probably too crowded for its population.

The right reflex: size before ordering

Density is decided before the order, not after receipt. Measure your actual area, then choose your population in boxes of 50 chicks based on the available space — and not the other way around. Remember that your subjects grow: a correct room on Day 1 can become cramped a few weeks later.

Every project is different: breed, building, climate, experience. Rather than a generic figure found on the internet, describe your room (dimensions, ventilation, city) on WhatsApp at +225 05 44 83 27 79: a NEXTEKCI advisor will help you for free to size the flock suitable for YOUR space.
