The farm dashboard: ten indicators, one page, one decision

You have been through five levels: starting, managing, protecting, steering, organising. What remains is to hold it all on one page. The dashboard is the tool of the entrepreneur who does not live in his poultry houses but knows every week where each of them stands, and what he decides. Ten indicators, read on the same day, compared with the targets and with the previous flock.

9 min read · 5-question quiz at the end

In this lesson, you will learn to
  • ✓Build a one-page dashboard with ten indicators per house and per site
  • ✓Set targets and thresholds, and read the colours before the figures
  • ✓Make the dashboard the farm’s decision ritual

The ten indicators

IndicatorCalculationFrequency
1. Cumulative mortality (%)Deaths + culls ÷ received × 100Day
2. Average weight vs target (%)Weighing ÷ target for the weekWeek
3. Uniformity (%)Share of birds within ±10% of the averageWeek
4. Water consumption per 1,000 (L)Meter ÷ number of birds × 1,000Day
5. Water / feed ratioLitres ÷ kilos of feedDay
6. Estimated / real FCRCumulative feed ÷ estimated live weight; real at the end of the flockWeek / end of flock
7. Feed cost per kg producedFeed (CFA francs) ÷ kg live weightEnd of flock
8. Net margin per flock and per m²Flock accounts ÷ usable floor areaEnd of flock
9. Laying rate and eggs per hen present (layers)Eggs ÷ hens × 100; cumulative eggs ÷ hensDay / week
10. Cash in days of feedMoney available ÷ daily feed cost of all the flocksWeek

Two farm-level lines are added: the occupancy rate of the houses (days occupied ÷ days in the year) and the week's incidents (breakdowns, visitors, treatments), with their withdrawal periods.

Targets, thresholds, colours

Each indicator has a target (taken from your best flocks, +5%) and a red threshold (levels 2 to 4). On the page, each cell is green, orange or red: you read the colours before the figures, and you go straight to the reds. A spreadsheet, a ruled notebook or a simple structured WhatsApp message will do; what matters is the same format every week, per house, consolidated per site.

The dashboard is kept by the technician or the health manager, and read by the entrepreneur on the same day every week, in twenty minutes, with one decision per red and a single action per house (level 4). At the end of each flock, the “real” line replaces “estimated”, and the flock enters the history alongside the previous ones.

What the dashboard changes

  • It replaces surveillance with measurement: you no longer need to be in the house to know.
  • It protects the team: the figures speak, not impressions; the bonus is calculated on them.
  • It convinces: bank, partner, buyer, insurer; a twelve-month dashboard is worth a file.
  • It drives progress: flock after flock, a tenth of a point of FCR, a point of mortality, one per cent of uniformity.
  • It raises the alarm before the disaster: water that drops on a Tuesday is seen on the Tuesday, not on the Friday.

And after the School

With this dashboard, you have the backbone of a poultry business that can be steered. The rest is learnt flock after flock, with your veterinarian, your team, and with NEXTEKCI: the Academy videos answer a specific problem every day; Maria, the online assistant, answers your questions at any hour; the information number +225 05 44 83 27 79 and the orders number +225 07 07 72 78 67 remain the same. Your level 5 certificate awaits you after the exam. Good luck on the road ahead, and good flocks.

For the entrepreneur

  • ›One page, ten indicators, three colours, the same day every week: that is your cockpit.
  • ›Set the targets on your best flocks, not on foreign tables; keep the history alive.
  • ›Show your dashboard to your bank and your buyers: it is worth more than a speech.

For the technician

  • ›Keep the dashboard per house, in the same format, with the readings of the day and the week.
  • ›Colour the cells according to the thresholds; report the reds the same day, without waiting for the meeting.
  • ›Replace the estimated with the real at the end of each flock and file the flock in the history.

The 3 questions to ask your technician this week

  1. Which cells are red on the dashboard this week, and for what reason?
  2. What is our FCR and mortality target for this flock, and where does it come from?
  3. How many days of feed does the cash cover for all the houses together?

Key points

  • •Ten indicators: mortality, weight vs target, uniformity, water per 1,000, water/feed, FCR, feed cost per kg, margin per flock and per m², laying, cash in days of feed; plus occupancy and incidents.
  • •Targets taken from the best flocks (+5%), red thresholds, three colours; same format every week, per house, consolidated per site.
  • •Read on the same day every week, twenty minutes, one decision per red, one action per house; real replaces estimated at the end of the flock.
  • •The dashboard replaces surveillance, protects the team, convinces the financiers, drives progress, raises the alarm in time.
