Purchased pullets: why and how to organise a quarantine before they enter the poultry house

Welcoming new pullets without immediately mixing them with the flock already there helps limit the spread of health problems. Here is how to prepare a separate space, observe the birds and decide how to integrate them methodically.

Prepare a separate space

Quarantine means keeping newly purchased pullets separate from the rest of the poultry farm for an observation period. It makes it possible to quickly spot a change in condition and reduce contact between the new birds and the flock already in place. It does not replace veterinary monitoring or usual hygiene rules.

Before the pullets arrive, choose a separate shelter that is clean, dry and well ventilated. It must protect the birds from rain, draughts and excessive heat. If possible, keep it away from the other buildings and avoid any direct contact between the flocks. Prepare feeders, drinkers and equipment reserved for this space in advance. Do not share this equipment with the other poultry.

On arrival: observe without rushing

Settle the pullets in calmly and check that they have access to clean water and feed suited to their age. Note the arrival date, the flock’s origin and any useful information provided at the time of purchase. These details will make it easier to discuss matters with your veterinarian if any questions arise.

During quarantine, observe the birds every day: activity, appetite, water consumption, breathing, posture, plumage condition and the appearance of droppings. A very lethargic pullet that isolates herself, has difficulty breathing, eats little or has unusual droppings deserves particular attention. These signs are not enough to determine a disease. If anything abnormal occurs, contact the local veterinarian and follow their instructions before mixing the pullets with the flock already in place.

Maintain a hygiene routine

Attend to the poultry already there first, then the pullets in quarantine. Wash your hands between the two groups and, if possible, use shoes or clothing reserved for the separate space. Limit visitors and avoid moving equipment from one building to another. Keep the surrounding areas clean, protect feed and water from contamination, and control the presence of rodents and wild birds around the facilities.

The length of the separation depends on the health situation on the poultry farm and the veterinarian’s recommendations. An observation period of two weeks is often considered as a guideline, but this alone does not guarantee the absence of a problem. Ask for advice if signs appear or if the flock is to join poultry of different ages.

A planned integration

At the end of the planned period, only bring the groups together if the pullets remain in good condition and no concerning signs have been observed. Prepare the poultry house, clean the equipment and organise access to water and feed to prevent jostling.

For your next flock in Côte d'Ivoire, set up a separate space and an observation routine now: this simple preparation helps protect your entire poultry farm.
