Broiler chickens limping during growth: examine their legs and correct rearing-related causes

Limping may be caused by an injury, unsuitable flooring or an unbalanced diet, but it can also signal a health problem. Learn how to examine the birds and check the conditions in the poultry house before difficulties moving become worse.

Observe the birds without delay

When a chicken limps, sits down or struggles to reach the drinker, do not consider this merely a growth delay. A problem affecting more birds in the flock can reduce access to water and feed, and warrants a prompt check. Identify the birds concerned, note when the problem first became visible and check whether it affects just a few birds or a large part of the group.

Gently catch a bird to examine both legs in good light. Compare both sides: look for a swollen or warm joint, a wound, a scab, abnormal colouring, an irritated footpad or deformed toes. Also look at the hocks and observe how the bird walks after placing it back on the ground. A lesion on the footpad can cause limping even if the leg looks normal from a distance. Wash your hands after handling the bird and return it to a quiet place.

Check the conditions in the poultry house

Inspect the litter around the drinkers and in areas where the birds gather. Wet, compacted or soiled litter encourages irritation and foot lesions. Repair leaks, remove wet clumps and replace them with clean, dry litter. Also check that the floor is not slippery, uneven or cluttered with objects that could injure the birds' legs.

If the birds are crowded, some may have difficulty moving around or reaching the feeders and drinkers. Distribute the equipment more evenly and make sure the weakest birds can drink and eat. In hot weather, inadequate ventilation and difficult access to water increase stress: check air circulation and that the drinkers are working, without creating a draught directly on the birds.

Check the feed and seek advice

Check that the feed is suitable for the growth stage and is distributed regularly. An unbalanced ration, particularly in minerals and vitamins involved in bone formation, can contribute to locomotor problems. Also check its quality and storage conditions: damp, spoiled or improperly stored feed must be discarded. Do not change the ration at random or administer medication, particularly antibiotics, without professional advice.

If several birds are limping, if a leg is very swollen, if a bird can no longer stand or if its condition deteriorates, contact a veterinarian or poultry farming technician promptly. Isolate very weak birds in a clean area with accessible water and feed, while observing hygiene rules.

Starting today, examine the legs, dry out wet areas and check access to water and feed. If the signs persist or become more widespread, have the flock assessed by a professional before administering any treatment.
